Alexander died in 1852 and in 1860, Ellen and her chidren moved to Georgia. Ellen is running a boarding house in Columbus, Georgia. Her boarders are marble cutters. Her daughters stay in Georgia, marry and have families of their own, but John makes his way to Chicago.
The next record is the Chicago census of 1900. John Cleland is now married to Eliza Munn. Eliza is 35, born in 1864 in New York. Her parents were born in Ireland. The couple have been married for 15 years, so they were married in 1885. Now in Chicago, they live at 1359 Harvard St. John lists his birthplace as Louisiana, his father's birthplace as Scotland and his mother's birthplace as Ireland. (These details confirm it's probably the same person.) John is working as a bricklayer and they have two children, Alexander and Eliza. Alexander, born in 1885 is 14 years old and Eliza, born in 1887 is 13.
